Hinds CC Football Travels To Southwest

RAYMOND, MS – The 2015 regular season comes to an end for the Hinds Community College football team on Thursday and the Eagles still have a legitimate shot at the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state playoffs.

Hinds (5-3 overall and 3-2 in the South) travels to Summit on Thursday to take on division rival Southwest Community College (3-5 overall and 1-4 in the South). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Eagles are currently locked in a three-way tie for second place with Copiah-Lincoln Community College and East Central Community College, with Thursday’s outcomes providing the final say on who gets in and who stays home.

Hinds torched Jones County Junior College, 38-13, in week eight, while the Bears of Southwest fell to East Central Community College, 47-17.

Hinds defeated Southwest, 31-30, in a thrilling, last-minute victory in Raymond in 2014.

The dynamic receiving duo of Javon Wims (Miami, Fla.) and Jahmmir Taylor (Fairburn, Ga.) has been a steady force for the Hinds offense all season, and both sophomores have put up huge numbers to date.

Wims is currently eighth in the country in receptions with 46 and has 765 yards and nine touchdowns, while Taylor has 27 catches for 449 yards and seven total touchdowns (five receiving, two rushing).

Sophomore defensive lineman Brandon Gaddy (Jackson) has continued his dominant play all season for the Eagles, collecting 43 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and one forced fumble and recovery.

Much like Hinds, the Bears of Southwest will lean on quarterbacks Casey Haygood and Tyler Shell for the offensive attack.

Haygood enters Thursday night’s contest having completed 67 of 131 passes for 823 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions, while Shell is 44-83 for 550 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. Shell has also carried the ball 34 times for 129 yards and a score.

The Southwest defense is anchored by defensive lineman Kevin Alce, who has 43 tackles, four sacks, two tackles and one forced fumble.

Russ Robinson and Joel Waters will be on the call for the live video webcast brought to you by the WiFi Sports Network.
