ATU takes Heart of Texas Bowl with 51-35 win over ENMU

With a combined 1,004 yards of total offense between them, Arkansas Tech downed Eastern New Mexico by the score of 51-35 in the NCAA Division II game of The Hoffpauir Auto Group C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl at Bulldawg Stadium in Copperas Cove, Texas on Saturday, December 5, 2015. Tech quarterback Aresnio Favor competed 19-of-29 passes for 353 yards and five touchdowns, including a 69-yard bomb to wide receiver Jabyes Cross for the Wonder Boys’ fifth touchdown of the game.

Cross caught three passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns, while teammates Jermaine Murdock and Brayden Stringer each accounted for one touchdown each in the air. Favor added two rushing touchdowns; on runs of eight and 21 yards.

The Greyhounds tallied two of their touchdowns by wide receiver Aaron Johnson, who caught six passes for 146 yards. Running back Kamal Cass carried the ball 36 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.

Defensively, senior linebacker Logan Genz tallied 10 tackles, with nine of them being solo affairs for the Wonder Boys. Defensive back Ibrahim Maiga and defensive lineman Denzel Philip each accounted for six unassisted tackles, with Philip adding two sacks to his stats.

The loss was the fourth in a row in 2015 for the Greyhounds; dropping their season record to 6-6. The Wonder Boys raised their record to 9-3 for the season with the win. Arkansas Tech head coach Raymond Monica was quoted in his meeting with the press after the game, stating:

“When you have a quarterback (Favor) who can make plays and a linebacker (Genz) who can make plays, those are the two spots you have to have making the plays. And all year long we’ve had good play from those positions.”

Earlier in the day, East Central Community College tallied 466 yards of total offense to down the Kilgore Rangers by the score of 35-21 to win the junior college game of the bowl game double header.
